“Our group is involved in the manufacturing and marketing of Torayca© Carbon Fiber and Composite Materials at a European level through its French subsidiary, Toray Carbon Fibers Europe. It is the largest facility of its kind in Europe. In 2012, we took the decision to build an industrial facility to manufacture polyacrylonitrile, the raw material used in the production of carbon fiber. This was an important strategic investment, as our competitiveness depends on our ability to provide our customers with a high-quality product that offers consistent mechanical properties. In order to guarantee an optimal level of quality, it is essential to have access to a reliable and precisely controlled energy source. The Lacq chemical park, operated by SOBEGI, was a natural choice as it met all our utilities, services and logistical requirements. The chemical park’s commitment to the responsible and sustainable management of the site, with on-site energy production and efficient waste-treatment facilities, were also key factors that attracted us to the site. “The history of ARKEMA in the thiochemical industry is closely linked to the history of Lacq Basin. We have been working hand in hand with SOBEGI for ten years to ensure the sustainability of our activities. To that end, we have developed an integrated economic model for the supply and transformation of hydrogen sulphide (H2S) extracted from the Lacq gas reservoir, which allows us to secure the raw material at a controlled cost, since it is not subject to international market fluctuations. “Ten years ago, we chose the Lacq chemical park to establish our fourth bioethanol production plant in Europe. The site is ideally located for our business in the heart of a corn production area, the raw material we use, with excellent road and rail connections and close to the port of Bayonne... all the conditions were met in an environment ready to welcome us. In particular, we have developed a partnership with SOBEGI based on their long-term ability to meet our energy requirements. SOBEGI's strength also lies in its ability to develop synergies between various industrial activities: the steam we use is produced locally via the recovery of the methane contained in the gas produced in Lacq. In addition, about 30% of the "green" CO2 that we reject is directly captured by a company established on our site. Tomorrow, we will be able to extract additional value from our other by-products by further implementing an effective logic of circular economy.”
